Our previous study revealed that Japanese mothers’ anxiety-related temperamental traits are similar to those of non-Japanese mothers. In this study, we evaluated whether Japanese mothers’ anxiety-related temperamental traits are similar to those of non-Japanese mothers in terms of their postpartum anxiety symptoms. Participants comprised 1,038 first-time mothers in Japan. We measured their anxiety-related temperamental traits and their anxiety symptoms using self-report questionnaires before and 3 months after delivery. The results revealed that Japanese mothers’ anxiety-related temperamental traits were similar to those of non-Japanese mothers. However, the prevalence of postpartum anxiety symptoms was significantly lower among Japanese mothers than among non-Japanese mothers. Our findings suggest that the prevalence of postpartum anxiety among Japanese mothers is lower than that of non-Japanese mothers, and that the relationship between the prevalence of postpartum anxiety symptoms and anxiety-related temperamental traits in Japanese women may differ from that in non-Japanese women.Newly-elected Mayor Kelly.
