The research demonstrates that superconductivity and magnetism in iron pnictide materials are intimately related, in contrast with the conventional view that magnetism drives superconductivity and vice versa. In recent years, scientists have made tremendous progress understanding the properties of these materials. However, the precise role of magnetism in the superconducting pairing mechanism remains unknown.
The team, led by researchers at the University of British Columbia, Canada, report they have determined that the superconducting pairing mechanism in these materials requires a particularly complicated spin-fluctuation exchange mechanism in which the strength of the coupling between spins depends on their separation and orientation. The research suggests that the magnetism in these materials is of key importance in the pairing process.
High-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictide materials—also known as iron chalcogenides—provides exciting potential for next-generation electronics. However, there is a challenge in isolating the observed superconductivity from magnetism and vice versa. As a result, conventional wisdom suggests that magnetism drives superconductivity and vice versa.
